Anonymous: What are the differences between prose and poem?

I guess one important thing that distinguishes both forms of writing is that; prose is a more common form of language; i.e its purpose is mainly to inform, thus it is often used in newspapers, for example.  From what I know, prose is often written in free verse- unlike poetry, it does not possess a defined, fixed structure, and can be viewed as ‘informal’ in some ways.

Poetry, on the other hand, serves as an art in itself- it is written in a flowery manner and normally conveys the writer’s thoughts in a way that makes it imaginative and abstract.  It also tends to have more of a defined structure, i.e the use of stanzas, rhyme, rhythm, metre etc which all contribute to the overall meaning of the poem.  Poetry is often thought to be both meaningful and ornamental at the same time, which makes it harder to create.

To put it simply, I would say that prose is often used to convey- it can be used in both the written or spoken thus it tends to lack a certain defined structure; whilst poetry is expressed in a form of art for readers to appreciate and enjoy, and in some cases, to connect with or understand the writer’s intended purposes.
